I have experienced a very pleasant evening in my role as a guest speaker at photography club "de Phoenix" in Rotterdam.
Topic of the evening:  digital BW / from landscape to abstract.

Inspiring / Inspirerend

Going through my book shelf , I stumble across one of Tim Rudman's books titled "Master Printing Course" . This book has been of great influence on my photography. Although switched to digital it was a real pleasure to flip through the pages again with all those inspiring images.

Bezig met uitzoeken van mijn boekenbestand, sta ik opeens met een boek van Tim Rudman in mijn handen: "Master Printing Course" uit 1994.
Dit boek is van zeer grote invloed geweest op mijn fotografie. Hoewel ik nu digitaal werk was het weer een genot en een feest van herkenning om weer eens door dit voor mij zo inspirerende boek te bladeren !

Matting considerations

My standard matting method is to leave a margin of 10 mm between the inside border of the mat and the outline of the photo which is printed with a small 2 pixel hair line (see picture 1), framed in a standard black aluminium frame. I find this method very tasteful and up till now it is my preferred method. The only disadvantage is that a difference between the paper color and the color of the mat will be very obvious. Since I use natural white as my standard mat material in combination with Hahnemuhle PhotoRag, the margin looks more white then for example Permajet Museum Classic.

When I was framing some pictures last week, I used a more thight mat without leaving a margin. I believe this is also a very common way to frame images. The advantage is that the paper whiteness is of no importance anymore. And although hard to describe, it seems to give the picture more depth.

The question is: do I want to change my standard matting style or use both aproaches based on printer paper and/or image characteristics.  Feel free to comment on this consideration.

Monochrome photography is about contrast. Not only contrast between licht and dark, but also between different materials, textures and perspectives. With this picture I want to show you that you can combine many types of contrasts in one image.  Who needs color ........!
